The plan was to have a smoothie, like you normally would, in a glass or in the more “fashionable-nowadays” jar. But there were three reasons it made itself into my bowl : One, It was just too pretty so i wanted more surface area exposed. Two, i felt i needed an even more powerful nutritional boost hence the toppings. Three, i fancied some texture you know, some chewiness!
If you want to make this, make sure you have at least one banana, four strawberries and a cup of pineapple chunks in the freezer from the night before. (Note: Just in general, ALWAYS always have bananas in your freezer or else shame on you!)
Why go through all the hassle of juicing and blending? This way you get the best of both worlds, by still keeping the fibre from the non-juiced fruits. Beetroot is under-rated as far as im concerned, since its a potent anti-inflammatory and detoxification ingredient. It does wonders for your liver and protects you against a host of diseases. The reason i prefer it raw in this recipe, is because thats when it’s nutritional density is at its peak. The pineapple, with the magical constituent of Bromelain, also fights inflammation in the body. Paired with Ginger (optional) they’re like batman and Robin basically. The nutrition from the toppings depend on what you use: choose Chia seeds for Omegas, Hemp for protein or Sunflower for Zinc. This Smoothie bowl might take 10 minutes to make, but its so worth it.
Ingredients (makes one Bowl)
1 green apple
1 small beetroot (raw, peeled) *
1small frozen banana
1cup frozen pineapple chunks
4 frozen strawberries (or any berries)
2 dates (pitted)
80ml plant-based milk (I used coconut)
2cm knob of ginger (peeled) (optional)
Toppings: (Up to you!)
Any Seeds (Pumpkin, sunflower, chia or hemp)
Any Nuts (almon or walnut)
Any Dried fruit
Any fresh fruit
In a juicer, juice your apple and the raw beetroot.
Add this juice to the blender along with the rest of the smoothie ingredients and blend.
Pour in a bowl and neatly arrange your toppings so that it looks as pretty as possible
(* If you dont want to use raw beetroot, use a cooked one, and skip juicing it, just adding it to the blender part – therefore you’ll be juicing only the apple)
