Golden Porridge / Χρυσαφένια Βρώμη

You’re gonna look at the ingredients of this and be like “Ok, she’s lost the plot”. But i NEED you to trust me on this. This is the most warming, hot and sweet bowl of porridge you’ll have. I admit looking at the ingredients you would think more “indian” than breakfast, but it just works so well taste-wise. Health wise though, it reaches another level. Turmeric is one of the worlds oldest and magical natural ingredients, being used in medicine for thousands of years, being anti-tumour, anti-fungal and immune-boosting. Then you have ginger, which is a natural antibiotic, anti-emmetic and anti-inflammatory. Aside from the health benefits of black pepper, it is included because, and many people don’t know this, but the active ingredient which makes turmeric so powerful (curcumin) becomes more bioavailable only in the presence of pepper. Cinnamon gives it a subtle lean towards the sweeter side, which is tipped over by honey (or maple syrup).

This is one of the best breakfasts you can eat if you’re feeling susceptible to a cold, have a low immune system or have gone through a period of indulgence (*cough cough i think we all have these days!). Its also good on just any day, whatever you’re feeling, because its just great. Mormor, this ones for you 😉

  • Total Time: 10m

  • 1/2 cup almond, rice or soy milk / 0.5φλτ. γάλα αμυγδάλου ή σόγιας
  • 1/2 cup water / 0.5 φλτ. νερό
  • 1/2 cup porridge oats / 0.5φλτ. βρώμη
  • a 2cm knob fresh ginger, minced * / 2εκ. κομμάτι τζίντζερ λιωμένο
  • 1 level tsp organic turmeric powder / 1κ.γ. βιολογική σκόνη κιτρινόριζας/κουρκούμη
  • 2 tsp. organic honey / 2κ.γ. βιολογικό μέλι
  • pinch of pepper / πρέζα πιπέρι
  • pinch of salt / πρέζα αλάτι
  • 1/3 tsp. cinnamon / 1/3κ.γ. κανέλα
  • 2 tsp. raisins (optional) / 2κ.γ. σταφίδες (προαιρετικό)

  1. Over a pan mince the ginger * so that the "juice" of the ginger also goes in pan. In the pan add the turmeric powder, pinch pepper, cinnamon, pinch salt, water and milk. Turn on the heat to medium and stir everything so that they combine.
  2. The mixture should get yellower/golder as you heat up. After everything is combined (2-3 minutes), add in the oats and 1 teaspoon honey. Stir
  3. Reduce heat to low, stirring once more. When you see the first bubbles (should be 3-4 minutes more) remove from the heat, its ready. Top with remaining tsp of honey and raisins (if using!)
  4. Place in a bowl and drizzle one more teaspoon of honey on top. Enjoy!
  • * Mince the ginger using a garlic crusher/ mincer, this way it will also release ginger juice which adds to the flavour of the dish
